The testing of the ranking system for Sail Simulator 5 have been successful. Within a couple of days more than hundred races have been sailed with about 50 sailors from several countries. Have a look at the Player Ranking lists under community.

The size of a multiplayer package has been reduced with up to a factor 7. This means that 4 full sessions of 16 ships of the 470 class can be sailed simultaniously. Also the number of sessions on which you can log-in has been doubled until 32. 
 
A new Sail Simulator 5.1.6.0 has been released with some modifications. Now the mainsail twist of the VOR70 can be adjusted for more speed. Racing statistic has been placed on the homepage with full honour to the class leaders and the top3 of the last sailed race.

Five hints for a high score

• Race against many strong, high score sailors.
• The winner gets additional points.
• On a course of 4 times the length, you will earn twice the number of points.
• Also if a race stops before you can finish, you will get points. How much depends how far you did come. So, don't give up and sail until the race stops.
• Start at least once a week otherwise you will loose 10% of your score.

A new Sail Simulator 5 update has been released. Download the v5.1.4.0 update to continue online sailing.

The first races with the new version have been sailed succesfully. Modifications to be mentioned:

• Improved stability of multiplayer sailing and racing.
• Blocking racing boats by non racers is not possible anymore.
• Using the auto pilot is now also possible while online racing.
• All reported bugs have been fixed.
• More realistic wind shadow of land and boats
• Leeward spinnaker sheet less tightened under automatic control.

For the October Sail Simulator 5 release we have developed a NMEA implementation to a COM port. With a navigation program you can read the data from the instruments on board of the virtual ships in Sail Simulator. Besides being very entertaining, this is a very good opportunity to get familiar with your navigation program. Perfect preparation for the coming sailing season.

The NMEA implementation can be read with all GPS navigation programs which support the NMEA183 protocol. WinGPS 4 Lite and Navigator only require the RMC signal of the GPS. WinGPS 4 Pro and Voyager can also collect the wind, compass, log and depth data. With Voyager  you can learn how to plan routes according to the weather and even make polar diagrams of (for example) the virtual Bavaria 36 in Sail Simulator 5.

You can run Sail Simulator 5 and WinGPS on the same computer. An alternate solution is to connect your gaming computer and your navigation laptop with Bluetooth.

NMEA implementation on the same computer is very easily made. Sail Simulator 5 installs a virtual COM port, which allows you to establish a free Port number. For now, only 32 bits Windows OS (XP, Vista and 7) are supported. We will expand the support of 64 bits later.
