Welcome to the Multiplayer section!
On request of many we have created a spot for multiplayers to meet. The goal is to create a meeting place for multiplayers, where you can find info about the multiplayer and interact with other multiplayers.
New Session Server Update !If you own the original Sail Simulator 4.2.2.5 on your computer, you can download and install the 4.2.4.0 update (April 3, 2003) for free, and test out the new multiplayer session-server. Also some important system dependent bugs are fixed.
Install and start up the update and select Multiplayer Select "Start a session" or "Join an existing session", and important select "Connect to session server". Type www.sailsimulator.com as session server address. Select "anonymous login" and "Connect". If there are no sessions you can start one yourself.
You also can look at the multiplayer page if there are sessions running at www.stentec.com. If you want to upload your own session-server on your site for organizing regattas using passwords for the players send an email to helpdesk@stentec.com

Sail Simulator 4.2 multiplayer racing !
Using a 56k modem to organize a race was hardly possible with version 4.2i. The message format was too big and 10 messages a second was too much for most analog modems. Our developers reduced this data size with factor 8. Moreover, the server's data rate can now be set to 3.5, 7.5 or 15 messages per second. Now you can use a 56k modem for organizing a race with 4 players (or more if your modem supports hardware compression). Maximum number of players stays on 16 (for now).
The new update now also accepts non-DX7a-compatible sound card drivers, that frequently disturbed multiplayer sessions after a short playing time. Our developers are very interested the number of clients that can log-in into a server on different modems (please send a mail to helpdesk@stentec.com). We hope this free update will stimulate organizing regatta racing via the Internet using Sail Simulator 4.2.
Multiplayer in 4.2i
With the 4.1 version multiplayer was introduced. In 4.2i its even more exciting:
- race against your friends on LAN or Internet
- smooth sailing of online boats due to improved time synchronisation
- play with two people with one copy of Sail Simulator (installed on two seperate computers). A check on licence codes permits max. 2 players.
- spectator mode: you can always log on as spectator.
How to multiplay?
To start a multiplayer session all you need is:
- 2 or more computers with Sail Simulator installed (same version needs to be installed)
- a network (Local Area Network or Internet)
One of the computers starts the session and chooses scenery and weather conditions. The others can join by logging on. How it exactly works, you can read in the helpfile of your Sail Simulator.
Racing Options
You can create races with:
- start and finish buoys
- count-down timer and starting signal
- automatic signal passing the finish line
Styling your boats
When sailing in a match you need your boat to be recognizable. You can create your own style with the Style Editor that comes with the 4.2i. You can use images (.bmp) for the sails and hull and choose colors for every other part of the boat. You can zip the complete style and send them to your friends so you can use that style in a multiplayer session.

Things you need to know about multiplayer
A lot is possible with the multiplayer option, but not everyting:
- Participants need to have installed the same version of Sail Simulator
- A max. of two players per copy of Sail Simulator can play (licence code check)
- The boats, boat styles and sceneries used in a multiplayer session, need to be installed on all participating computers.
