scenery designer toolkit v1.0

Introduction: How to build a sailing area ?

To make your an island-scenery for Sail Simulator 4.2 from scratch, follow the next steps:
  1. Start your Scenery Designer Toolkit and Launch DEM Builder
  2. Select File/New , type at Title a name: "Island", then click OK . A pink area with 'no data' appears (click for example).
  3. Select on the left the line icon , select in the top-right corner a height of minus 40 m (-40m), and click a closed depth contour line with left mouse button clicks. Click with right mouse button to close the line.
  4. Make another contour inside the previous one, now with a height of 50 m.
  5. Select the pencil icon on the left, add a height of 80 m, and click a point at the top (best seen at 200% zoom)
  6. Press on the right "Apply" to make it all effective.
  7. Now select in the menu DEM "interpolate", and wait until ready (for a minute or so). A new window with your drawing in grey scale appears (this is the actual DEM).
  8. Press on the icon "water preview" to set the water level on 0 m (default value).
  9. Save as "Island.std". Congratulations ! This is your first DEM file. Close DEM Builder. You can also save the other (pink) area if you want to make adjustments in the future (otherwise you may ignore it). You won't need it any more for your First Island.
  10. Start Scenery Designer Toolkit again and Launch Scenery Builder
  11. Select File/New. Type at Name the name "My First Island". Open the DEM file "Island" with the folder icon (3rd from top on the right), and press OK .
  12. A grid appears. Press OK, and now it happens. A real but "white" scenery and navigation chart is created.
  13. Select the Color icon on the right to add land colors. Make it your self by + Add and mixing Red, Green and Blue for colors at different height. A faster method is to read a scenery.scn file from an existing area, e.g. by C:\Program Files\Common Files\Stentec Shared\Sceneries\cursus\scenery.scn .
  14. Keep the middle mouse button pressed (or press 2 button on a 2-button mouse) and move the mouse to the front to create distance, and the right mouse button to change view direction.
  15. Select Scenery/Navigation Chart/View to see the navigation chart. Close the windows after exploration (click for example).
  16. Click on the 3D screen, and zoom-in (see point 13) until you see the 3D-cursor. Move the cursor with cursor keys and steer with the mouse until you find a place where you want to position a buoy.
  17. Optional: Select on the right Buoys , type + Add and select a Buoy type, and give it a name. You can move it with the cursor. Set in the Water tab (select icon ) the Enable Waves option. Deselect buoys and click on the 3D-scenery to explore the scenery, unless you want to drag a buoy behind you.
  18. Optional: You can add a self-made bmp file as a icon for the buoy on the navigation chart. Select scenery/navigation chart/create/objects and select a buoy, the bmp file under image and press OK.
  19. Select File/Register and "Yes" to use your first scenery in Sail Simulator 4.2. Close Scenery Builder.
  20. Start Sail Simulator 4.2 and select your new scenery, named "My First Island".
