Use this special toolkit to create or modify exciting sailing areas for Sail Simulator 4.2 (or higher).

The setup of the toolkit installs the following programs:

  • DEM builder 1.2 to create DEM's in *.STD format that can be used by the Scenery Builder Supported formats: *.STD (Stentec), *.DEM (Vista Pro), *.BT (VT builder), *.TXT (ASCII Elevation), *.BMP (256 color grayscale bitmap)
  • VT Builder transforms USGS and other DEM formats to *.BT format that can be used by DEM Builder
  • Scenery Builder 1.1 reads *.STD format created by DEM Builder. Color the scenery, add VRML objects in*.WRL format. An object library is included with buoys, jetties, etc. Creates and registers sailing areas for Sail Simulator 4.2 or higher including a navigation chart.

How to become a scenery designer?

  • Download and run the setup of the DEMO or Full version.
  • Follow the steps from the Introduction to create "My First Island" (Now also available in Dutch and German!)
  • Read carefully the extensive help file for an overview of all important options.
  • If you use the demo-toolkit read carefully its restrictions (demo restrictions).
  • Publish your Sail Simulator 4.2 sceneries on your site as compressed packages ready for other users. Send us a mail when ready. We are pleased if put a link to your site on sailsimulator.com

DEM: Digital Elevation Model

  • Creating a sailing areas starts with DEM Builder and one of the following data
  • A navigation map or sketch with height/depth contours or points used as a back ground for digitizing.
  • A *.bmp image where the grayscale indicates the altitude. You can make one with the paintbrush of your paint program to create an impressive fantasy area.
  • DEM files downloaded from the internet, or created by an other program like VISTA Pro. DEM's can be merged to make one big sailing area. You also can use the DEM files in *.std format from the existing sailing areas for modification and adding objects.
