More boating... Monday, 15 February 2010 16:26

Ranking Thursday, 10 December 2009 12:40

A new update for Sail Simulator 5 is expected to be released at the end of this week. One of the major changes will be a ranking system. Sailors will get points for sailing races and the higher place you finish, the more points you get. There are also several factors in use to make it more fair for low-point sailors racing against experienced high-point sailors. Further we also take in account the length of the race and how many boats you're competing with. The complete formula and explanation will be posted online when the update is released.

The Stentec Software 3D Art development team has begun working on new boat types for Sail Simulator 5. We can't say much about the exact plans, but here is a first impression of what to expect.

On March 31 a stable update of Sail Simulator 5 (v5.0.2.1) has been released with a navigation chart plotter and German language support. The next update is planned for the end of May, featuring:

  • Genaker and adjustable backstays for the VOR70
  • Spinaker and trapeze for the Dutch Valk Class.
  • Turn-up animation for the Stentec Laser crew standing on the daggerboard.
  • Independent crew displacement, in manual or automatic mode.
  • Depth dependent waves and land dependent wind.
  • Tell tales on the sails an a vane in the top of the mast (Valk, YD40)
  • A simple engine control, makes life easy for the bigger boats
  • Bavaria 36, as a stable touring yacht (click on the Sail Simulator 5 model under construction below)
  • Olympische 470 class. A 3D-hull model was supplied by the International 470 Class organisation. Top sailors Sven en Kalle Coster did offer to help us to realize a high quality modelling and promition. Notice that the jib texture on the test 470 above has replaced. Team Coster is on the top of the world ranking.

Candidate boat are an X-Yacht and the Tornado Catamaran. Selected sceneries are the Dutch Scheveningen (World Championship 470 in Den Haag, 2010) and Bora Bora. Already pictures were taken from Scheveningen harbor and beach for the 3D-modeling. Bora Bora is a long way to go from the Netherlands.

Our goal is to release in September a Sail Simulator 5 version suitable for international distribution. We appreciate your help to translate Sail Simulator 5 in other languages then English, German or Dutch.
